Dellinger 1st Statewide Candidate Seeking Open Seat to Earn Group’s Backing

(Raleigh 1/31/08)  Hampton Dellinger’s campaign received another boost today with the announcement by NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina that Dellinger will be the group’s exclusive endorsee in the Lieutenant Governor’s race.  Dellinger is the first statewide candidate seeking an open seat that the group has backed.   

“I am honored to receive NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina’s exclusive endorsement,” Dellinger said. “Since we cannot count on the U.S. Supreme Court to protect women’s reproductive health and freedom, it is more important than ever that we elect state officials who are committed to protecting those rights.  North Carolinians will always be able to count on me to protect women’s rights.”

In announcing the endorsement, NARAL Executive Director Melissa Reed stated: “Hampton Dellinger is 100% Pro-Choice and will be a strong leader for reproductive health in North Carolina. He not only has been a long-time consistent supporter of reproductive rights, but he is also positioned to win.” (A copy of the NARAL endorsement letter is available here.)

In addition to NARAL, Dellinger has the backing of the North Carolina chapters of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the United Transportation Union (UTU).  Last week, Dellinger reported having over $910,000 in cash on hand.  He is former Chief Legal Counsel for the Governor’s office and served as a Deputy Attorney General in the North Carolina Department of Justice.

The issue of abortion rights has been a focal point in the Democratic primary for Lt. Governor.  Last November, Dellinger included reproductive rights as one of the major issues on which he and an opponent, state senator Walter Dalton, disagreed. 

“The stakes in the Lt. Governor’s race are especially high for women’s rights. My principal opponent has opposed Roe’s essential requirement that a woman’s health be protected throughout pregnancy, and said that he would deny, except in the narrowest of circumstances, any reproductive rights after the first trimester,” Dellinger said.  (See http://www.hd08.com/differences/index.html for details).
